EPA moves to address biodiesel fraud
The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) and American Petroleum Institute (API) have each filed comments in support of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed biofuel Quality Assurance Program.
The program follows the EPA’s discovery of more than 140 million fraudulently created biodiesel RINs, and is intended to provide refiners with a defense to the liability created by fraudulent biofuel producers.
Charles T. Drevna, AFPM President, has described the new rule as a welcome attempt to address a significant problem. However, he has also highlighted the its failure to address the significant problems caused by the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) mandates. According to him, the RFS is damaging for consumers, as the EPA forces consumption of increasing amounts of biofuels that are incompatible with today’s cars and refueling facilities.
Drevna has urged that the EPA now takes steps towards addressing these latter issues
