Summer jobs

The ExxonMobil Foundation has announced that 30 Dallas County non-profit agencies will participate in the 2013 ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program. The program provides much needed assistance to non-profit agencies and helps college students gain valuable work experience and a better understanding of the important role of non-profit organisations.

These paid summer internships involve students in a range of activities, such as coordinating housing for area residents to implementing summer programs for underprivileged children.

To be eligible for this scheme, applicants must be current undergraduate students returning to college as a full time sophomore, junior or senior in the fall of 2013.

Girls in math and science careers

The ExxonMobil Foundation is partnering up with the National Engineers Week Foundation for the 10^th year in a row to host Introduce a Girl to Engineering day at 16 locations across the US. The program promotes interest in engineering among middle school students and helps reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and maths fields.

The need to engage girls in maths and science studies, and eventually careers, is critical. The National Science Foundation estimates that 80% of jobs in the next decade will require maths and science knowledge. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee reports that women represent just 14% of engineers and comprise only 27% of mathematics and computer science professionals.
