Colombia’s first commercial biofuel flight
On 16th October 2013, UOP LLC, a Honeywell company announced that Honeywell Green Jet Fuel powered the first commercial flight in Colombia operating with renewable jet fuel. A LAN Airbus A320 aircraft travelled with 174 passengers from Bogota El Dorado International Airport to Santiago de Cali, Colombia. One of the aircraft’s engines was powered by a 30/70 blend of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel and petroleum derived jet fuel. The renewable fuel is made with natural oils from camelina, an inedible plant grown in conditions where food crops cannot. The flight marked the first time any aircraft in Colombia has flown on renewable jet fuel.
Fuel details
The fuel can offer a 65 – 85% reduction in GHG emissions relative to petroleum based fuels.
Each gallon of camelina based fuel burned instead of petroleum reduces net carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 68%.
When used up to a 50% blend with petroleum based jet fuel no changes to aircraft technology are required and it meets all crucial specifications for flight.
