Western Refining support firefighters’ families

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Employees of Western Refining Inc. in the Phoenix area have raised US$ 108 058 for the families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighters who died whilst battling against a fire in late June. The fire spread over 2000 acres in Yarnell Hill.

19 members of the brigade tragically lost their lives and the employees of Western Refining have pulled together personal contributions that will help support the families. During July and August, more than 200 Western Refining employees wrote cheques of made payroll deduction donations, all of which will go to the families. Western Refining has pledged to match the employee funds raised.

‘Giving back to the community is a tremendous part of our business culture at Western Refining. This particular cause hit home in Arizona, and I’m proud of our employees for stepping up in a significant and personal way to help the victims’ families begin to move forward,’ said Jeff Stevens, President and CEO of Western Refining.

An anonymous Western employee said, ‘it was an honour for me to give what I could. I wanted to show my appreciation for the sacrifices made by these firefighters who gave their lives to protect others.’

The funds are to ensure that spouses and young families of the victims have some immediate financial assistance, as well as to help with opportunities as those young families grow older.
