CB&I

CB&I has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Shandong Sincier Petrochemical Co., Ltd. for the license and engineering design of a gasification unit to be built near Dongying, Shandong Province, China. The unit will utilise CB&I’s proprietary E-GasPlus technology for a three train facility to produce syngas for hydrogen, fuel gas and power. This plant will have the capability of operating on coal and petroleum coke, or a combination of these fuels with a liquid or solid residue from an upstream hydrocracking unit. This will be in addition to six other process units licensed earlier by Sincier using CB&I’s technology to produce octane boosting, clean gasoline blendstocks, residue upgrading and petrochemicals production.

Daniel McCarthy, President, CB&I’s technology operating group, said, ‘This award underlines Sincier’s continued trust in CB&I as a source of state of the art solutions for its process technology needs. The highly efficient, environmentally sound E-Gas technology has more than 25 years of proven commercial experience. This project embodies the latest advancement of E-Gas technology and will have the flexibility to simultaneously process both solid and liquid fuels.’

Energy Institute

The Energy Institute (EI) has announced that its President Elect to succeed Ian Marchant FEI in June next year is Professor Jim Skea CBE, FEI. Skea is currently Research Councils UK Energy Strategy Fellow and Professor of Sustainable Energy at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College, London. Until June 2012, he was Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre.

With strong links to policy processes, Skea is a founding member of the UK’s Committee on Climate Change and is Vice Chair of Working Group III (Mitigation) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In the past he has acted as Launch Director for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership. He was awarded an OBE for services to sustainable transport in 2004 and a CBE for services to sustainable energy in 2013.

Foster Wheeler

Foster Wheeler AG has announced that a subsidiary of its Global Engineering and Construction Group has been awarded a contract by PEMEX REFINACION for an ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) project at the Salina Cruz refinery, Oxacana, Mexico. Foster Wheeler’s scope of work, which also includes startup and testing, is scheduled to be completed in 2018. The contract value was not disclosed. The initial release of work, relating to detailed design and the procurement of long lead items, will be included in the company’s third quarter 2014 bookings. The balance of the agreed workscope is expected to be released in 2015.

The investment in the Salina Cruz refinery, in excess of US$ 500 million, is part of a significant clean fuels program being implemented by PEMEX as a result of the country’s recent Energy Reform. The objective of the program is to significantly reduce the sulfur content of diesel produced from 500 – 15 ppm. The ULSD project at the refinery, which Foster Wheeler is executing in a joint venture with Arendal of Mexico, is a complex upgrade which includes the major revamp of four diesel hydrodesulfurisation unit, the installation of new units for hydrogen production, sulfur recovery and sour water stripping, and significant upgrades to the utilities and offsites facilities.
