Clariant has announced that its CATOFIN® catalyst will be used in a new grassroots isobutene dehydrogenation unit which has been commissioned by Shandong Chengtai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. CB&I has been awarded the contract for the license and engineering design of the new unit to be built in Changyi, Shandong Province, China.

The unit will use CATOFIN dehydrogenation technology offered from CB&I and Clariant’s tailor made CATOFIN catalyst to process isobutene feed for the production of 114 000 tpa of isobutylene.

Isobutylene is used as a building block to produce MTBE and other downstream products.
