DOE authorises LNG exports by Cameron LNG and Carib Energy

The US Energy Department has announced that it has issued final authorization to Cameron LNG, LLC and Carib Energy LLC to export domestically produced LNG to countries that do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US.

The Cameron LNG Terminal in Cameron parish, Louisiana is authorized to export lNG up to the equivalent of 1.7 billion ft³/d of natural gas for a period of 20 years. Carib is authorized to export LNG up to the equivalent of 0.04 billion ft³/d of natural gas for 20 years from the proposed liquefaction facility in Martin County, Florida using approved ISO LNG containers.

The Department insists that it conducted an extensive and careful review of the Cameron LNG and Carib Energy applications. Among other factors, the economic, energy security and environmental impacts of the projects were considered, and it has now been determined that these exports are not inconsistent with the public interest.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has welcomed the decision. API Upstream Group Director Erik Milito said: “As the world’s top natural gas producer, America is in a strong position to create jobs, grow our economy, and bolster our influence overseas. Cameron Parish and Martin County are now the second and third projects to receive final DOE approval. These projects open the door to billion in local investment, thousands of new jobs, and a stronger trade balance for the United States.

“But dozens of other permits still face length delays”, he added. “We urge the administration to accelerate this process and work with leaders in Congress who have shown they are ready to strengthen America’s position as an energy superpower”.
