Oil and gas industry announcements: 10 July 2014

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

ABB

ABB is nearing completion of one of the largest oil and gas automation projects ever, an enterprise wide supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) that will monitor and manage the vast onshore and offshore assets of Asia’s largest oil and gas company, ONGC. The landmark automation project is thought to be the biggest and most complex SCADA system ever undertaken in the oil and gas industry and stands as the single largest automation and instrumentation project in India.

ACD

ACD has successfully passed the performance test (FAT) for their LNG LNG fuel gas pump system. ACD’s LNG fuel gas pump system, MSP-3SLH, Dual, will be installed and fuel TOTE’s Marlin Class containerships which will be the first LNG powered containerships in the world and operate between Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan P.R. The containerships will be ABS classified.

The FAT included full performance at the ship’s rated LNG fuel flow requirements from manoeuvring to full speed conditions. The system achieved 320 bar at flow rates from 1.4 – 11 m3/hr. ABS, USCG, TOTA, Shinhan Machinery and NASSCO were in attendance and witnessed the testing. ABS approved the LNG fuel gas pump system. USGC has already approved ACD’s MSP-3SLH design using hydraulic motors for the high pressure pumps and the oil lube system.

Albemarle

Albemarle Corporation has reconfirmed its commitment to enter the flame retardants market with commercial quantities of GreenCrest, a polymeric fire safety solution based on technology licensed from Dow Global Technologies LLC for use in expanded and extruded polystyrene foam applications. The company’s intent is to commercialise GreenCrest and to support customers as they transition from hexabromocyclododecane to GreenCrest, a sustainable polymeric product of choice, before the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals sunset date next year.

Bechtel

Bechtel has successfully delivered and installed all of the modules for the first LNG production train at the GLNG facility on Curtis Island, Queensland. The successful installation marks a major milestone in the construction of the plant, which will consist of two production trains.

The LULAC National Education Services Centries, Inc. (LNESC) is announcing the ExxonMobil/LNESC Scholarship program national recipient, Stephanie Diaz of El Paso, Texas, and 12 local awardees from across LNESC’s program sites. Diaz will receive a four year US$ 20 000 scholarship to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

GE

GE has launched an up to CAN$ 1 million ecomagination open innovation challenge to help accelerate technology development in Canada’s oilsands. The Innovation Challenge will target two of the biggest opportunities to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions in the oilsands: new uses for waste heat and improved efficiency of steam generation.

GE is calling for the best global minds, within and outside the industry, to help develop solutions that can be scaled and commercialised within the industry. The challenge is in two parts, with submissions due September 30, 2014 and March 15 2015 respectively. Winners of the challenge can potentially share up to CAN$ 1 million in seed funding to further develop and commercialise the proposed solutions and will be eligible to become a supplier or contractor to GE on future projects.

Optimus Technologies

Optimus Technologies has announced two significant milestones that are changing the US commercial truck industry. First, it is the first to receive US EPA Approval for an advanced biofuel conversion solution for existing medium and heavy duty trucks. Second, while approved for a wide range of fuel types, it is also the first to achieve compliance for use with pure biofuel derived from recycled cooking oil. Since the solution reduces fleet fuel costs up to 25% and reduces lifecycle emissions up to 80% without the prohibitive startup costs of compressed natural gas (CNG), it creates new business opportunities for advanced biofuel providers, from biodiesel refiners to ethanol refiners and cooking oil recyclers.

UOP

UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, has announced that its green fuels process technology has been selected by Petrixo Oil & Gas to produce renewable jet fuel and renewable diesel at a new refinery to be built in Fujairah, UAE. Petrixo will use UOP Renewable Jet Fuel process technology to process approximately 500 000 tpy of renewable feedstocks into renewable diesel fuel and renewable diesel, also known as Honeywell Green Jet Fuel and Honeywell Green Diesel. The process technology is capable of processing a variety of renewable feedstocks.
