LNG companies develop employment and training programme

The LNG industry in Gladstone has launched a new traineeship programme that will qualify 18 more local residents to apply for LNG Process Operator roles by early 2017.

A spokesperson for the LNG Process Operator Traineeship working group said that the joint investment made by Australia Pacific LNG, QGC and Santos GLNG, in developing the programme was a demonstration of their commitment to local employment and local training opportunities that lead to careers in LNG.

“We are each very proud of what we have achieved in Gladstone so far with the development of an industry that will contribute positively to the economic and social fabric of Gladstone over many decades. Our collaboration in developing the future operators of the industry is the right decision for Gladstone, offering word class training opportunities and providing locals with career prospects both locally or globally.”

Programme partners have been working closely with Energy Apprenticeships Group (EAG) over the past few years to develop a tailor-made programme for Gladstone that will see locals with no prior LNG experience gain the qualifications to apply for LNG Process Operator roles.

Trainees in the programme will be employed by EAG, a specialist group training scheme in the oil and gas sector with 17 years’ experience, and will enjoy on the job experience hosted at one of the three LNG facilities while completing their Certificate III in LNG Plant Process Operations.

EAG have engaged CQUniversity as the local training provider to start the training journey with them and the three LNG companies as they commence the exciting new programme for Gladstone.

To assist bringing best practice to the programme from the start, the Traineeship working group facilitated the development of a partnership between CQUniversity and Australia’s foremost training provider in process plant operations, the Australian Centre for Energy Process Training (ACEPT).

“This programme offers a world class training opportunity in Gladstone using experts in the field while still enabling our local training providers to build their own knowledge and training capacity in our industry. Introducing CQUniversity to ACEPT, who already have experience in LNG Operations excellence, seemed a natural fit” the spokesperson said.

Australia Pacific LNG, QGC and Santos GLNG each place great value on diversity in the workplace and encourage applications from all interested people including women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Successful applicants will commence the Traineeship with EAG in February 2016.

“With operations of all three facilities already underway or imminent, this traineeship complements the local training pathways we have already jointly developed for our industry.”

Together the three LNG companies employ more than 700 local residents at their Gladstone operations, including locally schooled and trained people.
