Pemex opens Houston gas stations

On 3 December 2015 Mexico’s oil company, Pemex, opened a gasoline station in Houston, Texas. The station is the first for the company outside of Mexico, and four more Houston stations are expected to open over the next few months. The gasoline will come from the US wholesale market.

Pemex officials were reported to have said that Houston was chosen because of its large Hispanic population, to which Pemex plans to market its station. Indeed, The Houston Chronicle noted that the opening ceremony featured a mariachi band. The announcement comes as the company plans to take advantage of Mexico’s energy reform.

Commenting on the new stations, Pemex officials said: “This pilot programme will allow us to judge the impact of the Pemex brand against others and will identify business opportunities as part of our evaluation process to enter other external markets.”

The stations are to be franchises, owned by third parties.
