Vietnamese oil tanker missing

A Vietnamese oil tanker has gone missing en route to central Vietnam from Singapore.

The Sunrise 689, which is owned by Haiphong Fisheries Shipbuilding Joint Stock Co., went missing 40 minutes after it left Singapore at 6 pm on 2 October. There has been no contact with the vessel since this time. It is feared that the ship has been hijacked.

Nguyen Van Phuong, an official with the Vietnam Maritime Administration said: “The vessel was carrying 5226 metric tons of oil products and should have arrived at Quang Tri province on Sunday as scheduled. 18 crew were also on board.

South East Asia has experienced a spate of hijackings this year, centred on the Straight of Malacca running between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Vietnam has alerted maritime authorities in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, seeking their assistance.
