Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Air Products

Air Products has signed an agreement to be the hydrogen fuelling station and technology supplier for FirstElement Fuel, Inc.’s initial network of 19 hydrogen fuelling stations to be built throughout California next year. The SmartFuel hydrogen fuelling stations will be supplied to FirstElement Fuel following the company’s success in winning multiple grants through the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) hydrogen fuelling programme. Air Products will also be the hydrogen supplier for all 19 stations, which will be open to the public at a time when several vehicle manufacturers prepare to launch fuel cell vehicles into the California market next year.

Ed Kiczek, global business director, Hydrogen Energy Systems, Air Products said, ‘this is recognition of Air Products’ innovative hydrogen capabilities. Our hydrogen fuelling station technology is a product that ha a small footprint, can be placed onsite at existing retail gasoline fuelling stations, and is also cost effective. We are excited to be a part of the project team and to have been selected by FirstElement Fuel to supply the station infrastructure and the hydrogen fuel for this impressive effort.’

Alberta Federation of Labour

A new, comprehensive report on the economics of upgrading and refining in Western Canada shows that an integrated upgrader and refinery facility would be highly profitable if it were built in Alberta. The report, entitled ‘Upgrading Our Future: The Economics of In Province Upgrading’, was prepared by internationally recognised energy expert, Ed Osterwald and commissioned by the Alberta Federation of Labour.

Gil McGowan, AFL President said, ‘the evidence keeps piling up that it makes economic sense to think like owners of the oilsands, and to keep good jobs here. This report shows very clearly that Albertans can move value out of the resources we own. We can create more jobs and generate more wealth by upgrading and refining our resources, instead of shipping them out of the province in raw form. It just makes sense for us as a province, and for us as a country.’

CITGO

Local CITGO Marketer MidState Petorleum and CITGO Petroleum Corporation donated US$ 1250 in CITGO Gift Cards for use as raffle prizes during the fourth Annual Emily’s Kids Foundation charity motorcycle ride on September 7. The ride raised nearly US$ 4000 for the charity and will be used to provide gas cards, parking passes and meals to the families of paediatric cancer patients in North Carolina.

Linde

Linde LLC is drawing close to completing the first retail hydrogen fuelling station the company will operate in the US. The station, which is expected to be online before the end of the year, is being installed at the Ramos Oil Company multi fuel station in West Sacramento, California, where Ramos currently retails gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, ethanol 85, methanol and racing fuels.

Nitin Natesan, business development manager, Linde Hydrogen Fuelling said, ‘we are very excited to be working with Ramos Oil on this project. This high throughput retail station is a very significant step forward in the commercialisation of hydrogen fuelled cars. While the acceptance of Linde technology for hydrogen fuelled vehicles is advancing at a fast pace in Europe, we’re now getting a real foothold in the US, with California leading the way.’

LNG America

LNG America has welcomed Captain George ‘Joe’ Paitl to its staff as Vp Marine operations and HSSE Compliance. Capt. Paitl is a career military officer and most recently held the position of Commanding Officer/Captain of the Port, Marine Safety Unit at Port Arthur, where he oversaw safety, security, law enforcement, and environmental regulatory compliance across a 39 000 m2 area spanning Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

Keith Meyer, President and CEO, LNG America said, ‘we are very pleased that Joe has decided to join LNG America adding direct operational and HSSE marine experience to our team. We are looking forward to accessing his experience, knowledge, and operational expertise as we build out the infrastructure necessary to provide LNG to the marine and other industries.’
