New York City’s biodiesel fleet law

REG® has praised NYC for announcing a new law that will ensure that a 5% blend of biodiesel is used in the city’s vehicle fleet beginning in 2014, this will then be increased to 20% in the not too distant future. Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed the legislation into law at New York City Hall.

The specifics

The new law requires the city’s fleet to use a B5 biodiesel blend and this will be implemented as of July 1^st 2014. Two years later on 1^st July 2016, the level will be increased to B20. A study will be carried out before B20 is fully implemented to ensure that year round it performs correctly. This will utilise 5% of the city’s fleet.

Home heating law

In addition to the above law, a B2 biodiesel requirement has been set for home heating oil and this has been in effect since 2012. As of July 1^st 2015 this level of biodiesel will be required for all heating oil sold to any building in the state of New York.
