API urges Supreme Court to protect consumers from higher ethanol mandate
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has filed a brief with the Supreme Court in regards to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) approval of E15; a blend of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline, which has been shown to damage cars.
According to API group downstream director, Bob Greco, E15 could leave millions of consumers with broken down vehicles and high repair bills. It is for this reason that the API are asking the Supreme Court to step in; to protect consumers by overruling the EPA’s E15 mandate.
Testing by the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) has shown that E15 can damage engines and lead to vehicle breakdown, even those vehicles that the EPA has approved to use the fuel. Hence, the API is seeking to encourage that the EPA immediately finalise its 2013 ethanol mandate and also lower the 2014 mandate in order to protect consumers from the introduction of E15.
Greco has highlighted several other issues with the mandate including incompatibility of E15 with service station equipment and incomplete automobile testing.
The API is part of a broad coalition of food, livestock, consumer, and environmental groups that have opposed EPA’s approval of E15.
