Driving change: the role of specialty coke in the energy transition

ON DEMAND - The demand for specialty coke, particularly needle coke and carbon precursors, is experiencing a notable upswing in both domestic and international markets. In this webinar, Chevron Lummus Global (CLG) will provide its insight into the intricate dynamics of today's evolving market landscape.

The surge in demand for specialty coke can be attributed to a convergence of influential factors:

  • Rising steel industry demands: needle coke is a key ingredient in the production of graphite electrodes, which are used in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to produce steel from scrap metal. EAFs are becoming increasingly popular as steelmakers seek to reduce their environmental impact, as they produce significantly less carbon dioxide than traditional blast furnaces.
  • Growing environmental concerns: specialty coke can also be used to produce synthetic graphite, which is a critical component of lithium-ion batteries that will play a major role in the electrification of various industries for renewable power storage. As carbon emissions are reduced to achieve energy transition goals, the demand for synthetic graphite is expected to grow exponentially.
  • Expanding electric vehicle sector: the electric vehicle sector is expanding at a rapid pace, with global sales expected to reach 56 million by 2030. This growth is driving increased demand for specialty coke, as both needle coke and synthetic graphite are essential components of electric vehicle batteries.

We invite you to participate in this webinar, where Al Faegh, Technology Director at Chevron Lummus Global (CLG), will provide his insights into the intricate dynamics of today's evolving market landscape. Discover the instrumental role played by CLG's cutting-edge carbon technology in efficiently converting a diverse range of feedstocks into invaluable products such as needle coke and synthetic graphite.
