Petrobras has completed the production and sale of the first batch of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from CORSIA-certified low-risk ILUC soybean oil, which attests to sustainability criteria and a lower risk of impact on new areas.

The volume sold, 3800 m3, was obtained through co-processing at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 1% renewable content in its composition. This percentage is aligned with the obligations established by the Fuel of the Future Law for reducing domestic aviation emissions in the initial years.

To produce the batch, Petrobras acquired CORSIA Low ILUC Risk certified soybean oil from Bunge, a supplier company. CORSIA is a programme of the International Civil Aviation Organization for limiting greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, which is highly relevant in the energy market, especially in the international civil aviation sector. This is the world's first soy-based SAF with international CORSIA certification for low ILUC risk (low Indirect Land Use Change ), guaranteeing that the raw material does not come from deforestation nor is it indirectly encouraging it.

The batch produced by Petrobras was sold to Vibra, expanding the supply of fuels with renewable content to the aviation market. With this new campaign, the company adds a new certified raw material for SAF production, ensuring flexibility for the production process and maintaining the company's commitment to seeking sustainable raw materials that allow for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“The commercialisation of the world’s first SAF with ILUC-certified low-risk soybeans demonstrates Petrobras’ commitment to sustainability, the energy transition, and the development of products aligned with market and societal demands. More than that, it also reflects our firm purpose of encouraging our suppliers’ production chain to adopt verifiable sustainable practices,” stated Angélica Laureano, Petrobras’ Director of Logistics, Commercialization, and Markets.

By adopting international standards for SAF production and stimulating the competitiveness of sustainable raw materials, Petrobras contributes to strengthening the production chain. Co-processing, such as that used at Reduc, allows the integration of renewable raw materials into the existing refining infrastructure, expanding Petrobras' capacity to develop and offer lower-carbon fuels to the market. This initiative reinforces Petrobras' commitment to a just energy transition and the supply of more sustainable products.
