The relationship between MOL and KMG dates back to 2004 and is growing closer: at the end of 2024, the companies signed a cooperation agreement on exploiting the opportunities in Kazakhstan, and with the current oil trading contract, they can further strengthen the security of supply in the region.
The CPC crude oil shipment has arrived to Omišalj, Croatia: the approximately 85 000 t blend, consisting mainly of Kazakh crude oil, further increases the volume of marine crude oil arriving in the region. Kazakh crude oil plays an important role in MOL Group’s oil diversification programme: it is one of the 14 crude oil types that the company has already tested at the Bratislava Refinery in Slovakia, and this type is also regularly imported into the region.
“MOL Group has been working for more than a decade to strengthen the Adria pipeline and its related infrastructure, make its refining technology more flexible, and build a new, commercially viable supply route. An integral part of this process is the identification of reliable suppliers and good quality alternative crude oil grades. We are pleased that after more than 20 years of cooperation, we can continue to strengthen our relationship with our Kazakh partners year after year,” said Gabriel Szabó, Managing Director of MOL Group’s Downstream business unit, in connection with the new framework agreement.
MOL and KMG took their relationship to a new level at the end of 2024: since then, the two companies have been seeking opportunities as strategic partners in the fields of hydrocarbon exploration and production, technology transfer, as well as crude oil supply and petrochemicals. The main goal of last year’s agreement was to expand the existing exploration and production cooperation and to apply MOL’s technology in Kazakhstan, while the current oil trade contract may further strengthen the security of supply in the Central and Eastern European region.
MOL Group recently signed a commercial agreement with MVM: 160 000 tpy of Azerbaijani crude oil will be imported into the region, which accounts for 1.5% of MOL’s crude oil processing. MOL Group – similarly to Kazakh crude oil – has been working with Azerbaijani crude oil for years: the company acquired a stake in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) oil field in 2020, from which it transported 5 million bbl of crude oil to the region in 2024.
