The project will add approximately 41 000 m3 of storage capacity, increasing the terminal’s total capacity to approximately 295 000 m3 and further strengthening its position as a key hub for chemical and energy transition flows.
The decision follows the recent commissioning of Project Rainbow 3, comprising 36 storage tanks and a rail tank car loading station. Delivered safely while maintaining reliability across a fully operational terminal, the expansion project stands as a testament to the expertise and commitment of the LBC team and sets the stage for continued growth.
Rainbow 5 Phase A includes the construction of 14 storage tanks, replacing legacy assets with next-generation facilities designed to enhance safety, efficiency and operational flexibility. Building on the sustainable development principles applied during previous expansion phases, the project will incorporate measures aimed at reducing environmental impact, such as material reuse and lower-carbon construction methods. Rainbow 5 Phase A also includes a second central truck loading station to support growing truck volumes and new connections to existing jetty infrastructure. Commissioning is targeted for end 2028.
Commenting on the decision, CEO Frank Erkelens said: “The approval of Rainbow 5 Phase A marks an important next step in the development of our Rotterdam Terminal. Coming shortly after the delivery of Rainbow 3, it reflects our confidence in the long-term outlook for Rotterdam and our commitment to continue investing in infrastructure that supports evolving customer and market needs. As one of the first major expansion projects under MOL’s ownership, it demonstrates our shared ambition to build on LBC’s strong foundation.”
Robert van der Hoek, Commercial Manager of LBC Rotterdam, added: “This investment underlines our confidence in the continued demand for high-quality, sustainable storage solutions in Rotterdam. By expanding our capacity and further upgrading our infrastructure, we are strengthening our ability to serve customers with greater efficiency while maintaining the highest safety standards.”
LBC Tank Terminals remains at the forefront of industry developments by responding to increasing demand for the storage and handling of chemicals and products emerging from the energy transition. This expansion further strengthens LBC Rotterdam’s position as a leading storage hub in the region, building on its well-established expertise in the safe and efficient handling of chemical products while supporting evolving customer needs and the energy transition.
