Calgon Carbon secures new contract with petroleum refining facility

Calgon Carbon Corporation has been awarded a three year contract by a petroleum refining company in the US Midwest to supply 30 carbon adsorption systems and reactivation services to control vapour emissions. The value of the contract will depend upon the amount of spent activated carbon that is reactivated annually, which is expected to be in excess of 2 million lbs/y.

The refinery uses the carbon adsorption system to capture vapour during venting operations in compliance with Benzene/National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) clean air regulations. The carbon adsorption systems consist of 30 VAPORPAC10 vessels, each containing 12 500 lbs of granular activated carbon (GAC). When the GAC is spent, it will be taken from the refining site and reactivated at Calgon Carbon’s Catlettsburg, Kentucky, facility. The customer chose the Calgon Carbon system because it provides a cost effective solution to capture volatile organic contaminants from air streams.
